Magnesium carbonate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula MgCO3, molecular weight 84.31, and relative density 3.037 [1]. Appearance: white granular powder. Decomposes at 350°C and loses carbon dioxide at 700°C [3]. Slightly soluble in cold water, slowly soluble in acid. Its trihydrate is colorless needle-shaped crystals with a melting point of 165°C and a relative density of 1.850. Its pentahydrate is a white monoclinic crystal with a relative density of 1.73 and decomposes when heated in the air. Hydrate can be obtained by passing carbon dioxide into the magnesium salt solution while adding sodium carbonate. The hydrate can be dried below 50°C to obtain anhydrous substance.

Use:
1. Used in the manufacture of magnesium salt, magnesium oxide, fire retardant coatings, inks, glass, toothpaste, rubber fillers, etc., and used as flour improver, bread leavening agent, etc. in food. [3]
2. Neutralize gastric acid, used for gastric and duodenal ulcers. [3]
3. Alkaline agent, desiccant, color-protecting agent, anti-caking agent, carrier, leavening agent and acidity regulator. EEC is approved for: table salt, powdered sugar, acidified cream, milk, ice cream, and biscuits. Used to prepare chemical leavening agents. Residues in food should not exceed 0.5% (Japan).
