Erbium oxide is a pink powder with the chemical formula Er2O3. It is slightly soluble in inorganic acids and insoluble in water. When heated to 1300 ºC, it transforms into hexagonal crystals and does not melt.
Er2O3 is the only stable compound among erbium oxides. Erbium oxide has a cubic structure similar to manganese trioxide. The Er3+center is octahedral coordination. See image "Erbium oxide crystal cell". The magnetic moment of Er2O3 is also relatively large, at 9.5 M.B.
It can react with acids to generate corresponding erbium (III) salts. For example, in hydrochloric acid, oxides undergo the following reaction to generate erbium (III) chloride:
Er2O3 + 6HCl → 2ErCl3 + 3H2O
An interesting characteristic of erbium oxide is that they can be used to create upconversion luminescent materials. Photon upconversion occurs in infrared or visible light, low-energy light that is converted into high-energy ultraviolet or purple radiation through multiple transfers or absorption of energy.
Application :
Mainly used as an additive for yttrium iron garnet and as a control material for nuclear reactors, it is also used in the manufacture of special luminescent glass and glass that absorbs infrared radiation, and as a glass coloring agent. Other properties and preparation methods are the same as those of lanthanide elements. Used for making pink glass.
