Magnesium carbonate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula MgCO3, molecular weight 84.31 and relative density 3.037 [1]. The appearance is white granular powder. Decomposes at 350°C and loses carbon dioxide at 700°C [3]. Slightly soluble in cold water, slowly soluble in acids. Its trihydrate is colorless needle-like crystals, melting point 165°C, relative density 1.850. Its pentahydrate is white monoclinic crystals, relative density 1.73, decomposed by heating in air. It can be obtained from magnesium salt aqueous solution by passing carbon dioxide while adding sodium carbonate, the hydrate can be obtained by drying the hydrate below 50ºC anhydrous material.
